Musts of Successful Blogging

When you look at everything that it takes to create a successful blog, it is extremely simple to get bogged down in the details.  However, if you take a moment, step back, and look at the big picture, there are some basic tenets that can be found at the foundation of nearly every successful blog.  While there will always be some exceptions to the rules, they are few and far between.  Here is a closer look at some of the fundamental things that need to become a part of the framework of your blog in order to become successful.

One of the most important aspects of every successful blogger is confidence.  It is surprising how many people will call themselves hobby bloggers, even though that isn’t really what they want to be.  They call themselves B-Listers when they know that they are capable of doing more.  Without confidence in yourself, you will likely pass up opportunities that could make you more successful.  More importantly, if you are not confident in yourself, then why should other people have confidence in what you are saying.  There are nor set rules dictating that you remain an average blogger.  In fact, the blogosphere is always quick to accept anyone with the confidence to say whatever they want to say and share whatever information that they want to share.

Another trend of successful blogs is to be involved with guest posting.  This means both allowing guest posters as well as doing some guest posting yourself.  The reason that most people fear accepting guest posts is that they think that their readers will “discover” that they guest poster is better than they are.  Then the readers will start reading the guest posters blog instead of their blog.  The truth is, readers will always give you the credit for what a guest poster says, because you are the one presenting them with the information.  Additionally, if your readers to read the guest posters blog, they won’t stop reading yours.  If anything, they read your blog more often because you provide them with valuable information

In terms of being the guest poster, most bloggers don’t have a problem actually writing the post, but rather contacting other bloggers and finding somewhere to post it.  Successful bloggers have already found the value in accepting quality guest posts and as long you deliver real value in the content, they will rarely turn your down.  Plus, successful bloggers like building relationships with other people in their niche and guest postings are great way to build relationships.

The final thing that nearly all successful bloggers do is create products of their own.  Most people who are trying to become successful bloggers have plenty of products in mind such as ebooks, videos, seminars, etc. however they never get around to doing it.  The product creation phase is always something that stays on a horizon and never gets put into action.  If you truly want to create a profitable blog, at some point you will need to create a product.  Not only is this a recurring source of income but is also a great way to build additional credibility for your name.

There are a lot of things that go into the makings of a successful blog, however these three things tend to be a constant across blogs that are currently successful.  These three things include: confidence in yourself and what you have to say, confidence to accept and create guest posts, and finally, you need to create at least one product that you can call your own.

When you first start blogging, there are a lot of simple things that can get in your way.  Fortunately, a majority of these blogging problems are very simple to overcome as long as you can quickly identify them.  Identifying the problem is an essential first step to effectively blogging over the long term.  You are going to run into one problem or another, it is the nature of running your own business.  However, if you don’t know that the problem is even there, then there is no chance that you will overcome it.  Here is a quick look at 3 of the most common blogging barriers and simple steps that you can take to overcome them.

One of the first problems that many people have when they start blogging is that they quickly become overrun with new ideas.  While having new ideas is never a bad thing, you need to learn how to control them.  The reason that too many ideas can become a problem is that most people tend to quickly latch onto a new idea regardless of whether they have completed their current project or not.  It is impossible to be a successful blogger, if you lack the ability to focus on a single idea and see it through to completion.  The easiest way to overcome this barrier is to create a separate project list that is completely dedicated to new ideas.  That way, you can spend a few minutes hashing out the basic tenants of your new idea and then set it aside from later.  The added benefit of this technique is that you will always have another project lined up once you complete the one that you are currently working on.

Another common barrier to effective blogging is holding back.  It is surprisingly common how many people purposely don’t go all out in terms of creating and promoting their blog.  Normally, this isn’t because they don’t want to succeed, but rather because they are scared of not succeeding.  If you do something to the best of your abilities and really put everything that you have into it, but still fail, then you don’t have any excuses.  However, if you don’t go all out, then you have a built in reason that you failed.  For some reason, people would rather than have a reason to fail than give themselves a reason to succeed.

The final major barrier that a lot of people have problems overcoming is actually asking for the sale.  It is quite a paradox, someone wants to start blogging in order to generate a profit, but hesitate to actually ask for money.  In short, if you don’t ask for a sale, then you are not going to get one.  Fortunately, there really is an easy way around this.  When you start blogging, only promote products that you absolutely have faith in.  If you would recommend them to your friends and family, then why shouldn’t you recommend them to your readers?  By making sure that you are only recommending quality products (which you should do anyways), then recommending them to your readers will become a natural part of your blogging norm.

There are countless ways that a blog can fail to make money without you getting into your own way.  By identifying artificial problems that you are creating for yourself, it will be much easier to overcome them and create a blog that is successful over the long term.  Three of the most common barriers that people create for themselves include: idea-overload, holding back, and asking for money.  If you think that these are barriers standing your way, then you are in luck, because you can easily overcome them.

Are You Really Working For Yourself Online?

There are a variety of home business and online business models that allow you to work independently from home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are “working for yourself online”.

If your ultimate goal is not only financial freedom, but also to work only for yourself, then it is important to choose a business model that will allow this to happen.  In many cases there is a fine line between working for yourself and working for others and it is important to find out which side of the fence you are on.  By understanding this, you will be able to more effectively create a business strategy that will make it more likely that you will end up working for yourself, even if you are currently using a business model that has you working for others.

A very simple indicator of who you work for is the pricing, more specifically who sets the prices.  Freelancing is a great example of a business model that allows you to work for yourself, but could also end up forcing you to work for other people as well.  If you are a freelancer and simply accept jobs at the price point that is offered, then there is a good chance that you are “working for someone else”.  If you are meeting only their schedule/time line and getting paid what they want to pay you, then you may want to alter your freelance strategy a bit.

On the same note, there are a wide variety of freelancers that would be classified as working for themselves online because they are the ones that are determining their pay rate as well as when/how the project will be completed.  In many cases, a freelancer will primarily be working for other people as they are getting established and building their credibility.  Then, over time, they will start to create a business structure that is more conducive to working for themselves.  Often, this change occurs once a demand for their skills starts to grow.  Once a freelancer is generating enough income that they can start picking and choosing their assignments, they will slowly make the transition from working for others to working for themselves on the Internet.

You might be wondering why identifying this difference is important to your long term sustainability.  The main reason is because if you are always working for someone else, then you are going to be facing constraints of some sort.  This could mean restraints on your time, how much work you must complete per day, and how much you can get paid.  If the reason that you started working from home is because you wanted more freedom and a higher income, then you want to always be monitoring who you are really working for.

Freelancing is one of the most common examples of a business model in which you could be working for others or for yourself, however it applies to all home based business models.  For example, if you are an affiliate marketer and are in a program that is forcing you to generate X amount of sales per month, then you could be working for them instead of yourself.  In order to determine who you are working for, take a look at your control over your schedule and who is setting the prices/rules and being able to determine who you really work for will be simple.  If you find out that you are working for someone else, then you may want to alter your business strategy in order to give yourself more freedom and in the long run, more profits.
