Home Business Archives

There are a lot of home based business that would be exceptionally successful if only the owner of the business didn’t fall victim to common problems.  Fortunately, all of these problems are easy to overcome as long you plan ahead and identify them early.  The reason that these problems tend to primarily occur to home based businesses is because people sometimes disregard some of the subtle differences between working at home and working in an office.  Here are some common problems that you should always be on the lookout for.

The first common problem is that it is extremely easy to become distracted at home.  Why?  Because home is where you relax, hang out, and even sleep.  Your home is normally the most comfortable place that you spend your time, which means that it is really easy to relax there.  Unfortunately, that means that it takes double the self-motivation to actually get up in the morning and do some work.

Along the same lines of losing motivation is overlapping your personal space and your work environment.  Granted, one of the benefits of working from home is that you can work when and where you want, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t separate the two.  By creating a separate workspace that you can retreat to during work hours, you will not only stay motivated more easily, but you will also be able to get away from work.  If you work at a desk in the living room, then when you are relaxing and watching television, your work is still only a few feet away, which means you will never really get away from your work.

Another problem that home based business owners have is that they don’t always treat their business as a business.  For example, many home based businesses do not have a business plan.  This may not sound important because if you are working alone, you know exactly what is going on.  But a business plan is a lot more than simply an assessment and projection of your business.  It includes goals that you expect to meet; it includes market analysis; it includes standard operating procedures, and more.  In short, it describes not only how you should run you business, but also what it will take to be successful.

The fourth potential problem is zoning laws.  It is surprising how many stories there are about home based businesses being shut down because a nosy neighbor made a complaint.  If your home based business is very discreet, then you won’t likely have any problems, however it is always a good idea to know the zoning laws in case an issue every arises

The final major problem of home based business owners is that they stand in their own way.  Just because you are running a home based business doesn’t mean that it has to be small.  It is still a business and you should be afraid to push your limits to help the business grow as much as possible.  Never sell yourself or your business short because it takes place in your home.

There are a lot of things that can a home based business to fail, but the biggest problem isn’t the business itself, the problem in normally the owner.  Five of the most common mistakes that home based business owners make includes: becoming distracted, not creating a separate workspace, not treating it like a “real” business, not knowing the zoning laws, and simply getting in their own way.

Are You Really Working For Yourself Online?

There are a variety of home business and online business models that allow you to work independently from home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are “working for yourself online”.

If your ultimate goal is not only financial freedom, but also to work only for yourself, then it is important to choose a business model that will allow this to happen.  In many cases there is a fine line between working for yourself and working for others and it is important to find out which side of the fence you are on.  By understanding this, you will be able to more effectively create a business strategy that will make it more likely that you will end up working for yourself, even if you are currently using a business model that has you working for others.

A very simple indicator of who you work for is the pricing, more specifically who sets the prices.  Freelancing is a great example of a business model that allows you to work for yourself, but could also end up forcing you to work for other people as well.  If you are a freelancer and simply accept jobs at the price point that is offered, then there is a good chance that you are “working for someone else”.  If you are meeting only their schedule/time line and getting paid what they want to pay you, then you may want to alter your freelance strategy a bit.

On the same note, there are a wide variety of freelancers that would be classified as working for themselves online because they are the ones that are determining their pay rate as well as when/how the project will be completed.  In many cases, a freelancer will primarily be working for other people as they are getting established and building their credibility.  Then, over time, they will start to create a business structure that is more conducive to working for themselves.  Often, this change occurs once a demand for their skills starts to grow.  Once a freelancer is generating enough income that they can start picking and choosing their assignments, they will slowly make the transition from working for others to working for themselves on the Internet.

You might be wondering why identifying this difference is important to your long term sustainability.  The main reason is because if you are always working for someone else, then you are going to be facing constraints of some sort.  This could mean restraints on your time, how much work you must complete per day, and how much you can get paid.  If the reason that you started working from home is because you wanted more freedom and a higher income, then you want to always be monitoring who you are really working for.

Freelancing is one of the most common examples of a business model in which you could be working for others or for yourself, however it applies to all home based business models.  For example, if you are an affiliate marketer and are in a program that is forcing you to generate X amount of sales per month, then you could be working for them instead of yourself.  In order to determine who you are working for, take a look at your control over your schedule and who is setting the prices/rules and being able to determine who you really work for will be simple.  If you find out that you are working for someone else, then you may want to alter your business strategy in order to give yourself more freedom and in the long run, more profits.

It doesn’t matter how dedicated you are to working from home to create and maintain an online business, there will come a point when you notice that your business motivation levels are starting to wane.  It normally happens slowly over time, so you may not even realize it until your productivity has slowed to a halt  However, because it happens over time, motivation is something that you can maintain by creating certain daily habits.  Without motivation, your home business is going to slowly crumble, so make sure that you keep your head in the game on a daily basis.

One of the simplest things to do when you are starting to lose focus is to simply take a break.  Some people prefer to just get outside and take a walk to clear their head and refresh themselves, while others just need to take the rest of the day off.  Other people find it best just to switch projects for a while.  No matter how much drive you have, there are going to be times that your business motivation will falter and trying to push through it will often cause more harm than good.  If you aren’t focused, then you will increase the chance of making a costly mistake or simply no longer work efficiently.  2 hours of very efficient work will almost always have better results than if you work for 8 hours, but continually lose your focus.  By taking a break, you stay focused and get more done.

Another way to help maintain a high level of motivation is to set boundaries for yourself.  Since you are working for home, it is really easy to want to be in front of your computer all the time.  However, you need to set aside time where you can take time for yourself and/or your family and friends.  Do you think that you could work 60+ hours a week at a regular job?  Probably not, so why would you think that you can do it when you are working from home.  Just because the location is different, doesn’t mean that your results will be different.

Another way to help keep your motivation higher is to make sure that you are enjoying your free time.  A common problem is that people will set aside time for themselves, but they end up thinking about work the entire time.  You need to make sure that you are enjoying your free time.  Besides, one of the main reasons that people work from home is because they want more free time, so why wouldn’t you want to enjoy it.

Motivation is an issue that is consistently addressed in the regular workplace and for good reason.  If you are not motivated, you will make more mistakes, not work efficiently, and will simply not enjoy what you are doing.  The same is true when you are trying to start or run an online business from home as well.  By making sure that you take regular breaks, set personal boundaries for yourself, and making the most of your free time, you will be able to maintain a higher level of business motivation and run a more successful home business.
