The idea that you can make money from blogging has been established for some time.  However, a lot of people think that they only way to do this is by adding some form of advertising or promoting affiliate offers.  The truth is that there are a lot of indirect ways that a blog can be profitable.  In fact, most small business’s and home business’s that benefit from having a blog, do so indirectly.  Here is a quick look at some of the different ways that you can profit from your blog indirectly.

One of the most common ways that people can indirectly profit from their blog is through consulting or speaking engagements.  If you are viewed as an expert in your field, then people will naturally want to ask you for advice.  In fact, a lot of people are willing to pay for it.  While this is better suited for some niches over others, it is still extremely common.

If you are blogging as part of your online business strategy, then you may actually get job offers because of your blog.  There are a lot of stories about people who were contacted about a particular employment opportunity, normally on a short contract basis, because a company liked their blog.  The reason that this has become commonplace is because larger companies have discovered that bloggers, through blogging, have already actively demonstrated their particular expertise within a given field.  In fact, in most cases, a blog will do more to promote your skill and expertise better than any resume could.

Another potential way to earn money because of your blog is through writing deals.  There are a number of different ways that this is possible.  The first is as a freelance writer.  In fact, many of the most successful freelance writers will have a website and blog of their own because it really is such a great tool.  There are offline writing opportunities that may be made available as well.  For example, a number of newspapers and news organizations have offered bloggers paid positions within their company.  The final, option is to actually get a book deal.  There are have been a large number of publishing companies that have offered bloggers a chance to condense their blog into a book and get it published.

You also shouldn’t discount the potential connections that your blog will give you.  Through your blog, you can meet all sorts of people within your industry and one of them could be a future business partner.  Because the people reading your blog will have similar interests or share a similar expertise within your given field, there is no reason why you couldn’t create a business opportunity together.

As you can see, there are a number of different ways that you can profit  from your blog indirectly.  You don’t need to fill your blog with affiliate offers and banner ads to make a profit.  If your content is good enough, you may end up receiving more opportunities that you could ever have imagined.

How Important is a Personal Blog?

There has been a lot of debate over whether or not a personal blog should be considered a business asset and whether it can really help you and your home business.  The obvious difference between your personal blog and your business blog is that the personal blog will likely cover much broader interests because most people have an eclectic range of interests.  However, it is important to note that a personal blog can still be profitable.  But is a personal blog really that important?  Can it help you with your business blogs and websites?  In general the answer is a definitive yes and here are some reasons why.

The first reason that personal blogs are very useful is that they can be used for testing purposes.  There is literally nothing that you cannot test on your personal blog.  Plus, by testing on your personal blog, you don’t put any of your primary money-making blogs at risk.  Here are some examples of how you can use your personal blog for testing.  There are a variety of technical issues that can be tested such as changing CMSs, testing out new templates/themes, new scripts, new software, and more.  There is nothing worse than testing out a new software on your money making site only to realize that there is some sort of problem.  On the other hand, if you test these things out on your personal site, you can tweak and test without affecting your bottom line.

You can also test out niche ideas.  While you obviously don’t want to spend a lot of time testing out a niche on your personal blog, posting 4 or 5 posts about a topic and then promoting them can give you a good idea of how easy or difficult penetrating the market will be.  It is also a great place to test what types of products are the most profitable or convert the best.  You can even use your personal blog to build a preliminary list which can then be directed to your new money making sites.

Another big benefit of creating a personal blog is that it gives you chance to test out your voice.  Some people can pull off comedy or sarcasm when writing, while other people are detail oriented and love explaining the nuances of a subject.  It can be tough getting your feet wet and really discovering the best method of communication for you.  Your personal blog is great place to do this as well as test out different methods of communication like creating audios and videos.

Are there any potential drawbacks to having a personal blog?  In general, there are not any drawbacks to having a personal blog.  With that being said, there are times when it could become an issue.  For example, if you start devoting all of your time to your personal blog and ignore your money making sites, then it would become a problem.  If your personal blog become more business than personal, then it could lose it benefits.  As you can see, there are circumstances that could make a personal blog, less useful, but that doesn’t outweigh the potential benefits.  The advantage of having a live site to do all of your testing (technical, niche, style, etc) will almost always outweigh the potential disadvantages that a personal blog can have.

Musts of Successful Blogging

When you look at everything that it takes to create a successful blog, it is extremely simple to get bogged down in the details.  However, if you take a moment, step back, and look at the big picture, there are some basic tenets that can be found at the foundation of nearly every successful blog.  While there will always be some exceptions to the rules, they are few and far between.  Here is a closer look at some of the fundamental things that need to become a part of the framework of your blog in order to become successful.

One of the most important aspects of every successful blogger is confidence.  It is surprising how many people will call themselves hobby bloggers, even though that isn’t really what they want to be.  They call themselves B-Listers when they know that they are capable of doing more.  Without confidence in yourself, you will likely pass up opportunities that could make you more successful.  More importantly, if you are not confident in yourself, then why should other people have confidence in what you are saying.  There are nor set rules dictating that you remain an average blogger.  In fact, the blogosphere is always quick to accept anyone with the confidence to say whatever they want to say and share whatever information that they want to share.

Another trend of successful blogs is to be involved with guest posting.  This means both allowing guest posters as well as doing some guest posting yourself.  The reason that most people fear accepting guest posts is that they think that their readers will “discover” that they guest poster is better than they are.  Then the readers will start reading the guest posters blog instead of their blog.  The truth is, readers will always give you the credit for what a guest poster says, because you are the one presenting them with the information.  Additionally, if your readers to read the guest posters blog, they won’t stop reading yours.  If anything, they read your blog more often because you provide them with valuable information

In terms of being the guest poster, most bloggers don’t have a problem actually writing the post, but rather contacting other bloggers and finding somewhere to post it.  Successful bloggers have already found the value in accepting quality guest posts and as long you deliver real value in the content, they will rarely turn your down.  Plus, successful bloggers like building relationships with other people in their niche and guest postings are great way to build relationships.

The final thing that nearly all successful bloggers do is create products of their own.  Most people who are trying to become successful bloggers have plenty of products in mind such as ebooks, videos, seminars, etc. however they never get around to doing it.  The product creation phase is always something that stays on a horizon and never gets put into action.  If you truly want to create a profitable blog, at some point you will need to create a product.  Not only is this a recurring source of income but is also a great way to build additional credibility for your name.

There are a lot of things that go into the makings of a successful blog, however these three things tend to be a constant across blogs that are currently successful.  These three things include: confidence in yourself and what you have to say, confidence to accept and create guest posts, and finally, you need to create at least one product that you can call your own.
