Keyword research is not only one of the first steps to effective search engine optimization, but it is also one of the most important.  In short, your keyword research should tell you how many people could use to the internet to find your website.  The problem that most people run into is that keyword research can be very data intensive.  It is really easy to get bogged down in all of the data and never make any progress.  Fortunately, categories can make your keyword list much more useful.

The big problem that you need to overcome is that gathering the data alone isn’t enough.  The data needs to have meaning.  It is great to have thousands of keywords and their associated search volume, but it won’t tell you what to do next.  This means that you need to find a way to make your keyword research more actionable.  Essentially, your research needs to tell you exactly what to do next.  By using categories to filter all of your results, it is much easier to find out what your next steps need to be.

The first thing that you need to do is create the initial keyword list.  There tons of online tools that will be able to take care of this for you.  Let’s say that you have a clothing website and what to find keywords based upon the brand and the color.  You could end up with tens of thousands of potential keywords, if not more.  Once you have your keywords, it is time to gather the data.  Once you have gathered all of the data, the next step is put your categories to work.

This is where a program like Excel comes in very handy.  First you need to create all of your keyword categories, in this case it would be something like type of clothing (shirts, pants, dresses, etc), brand, and color.  Then you need to add your keywords.  If you have a solid handle on excel functions, then setting up an array formula is priceless for this.

So once your spreadsheets are complete, what will you actually learn?  The first thing that you will learn is the structure for your website.  This data will show you the easiest ways that these categories can be broken down.  The second thing that you will learn is which keywords and products should be considered a priority within each category.  For example, if you are trying to set up a category for “men’s dress shirts” then this data can tell you which keywords under this category get the most searches on a regular basis.

You can then set up your main category page to focus on these products.  For example, if your results tell you that most people are searching for “blue men’s dress shirts” and very few people are searching for “red short sleeve men’s dress shirts” then you don’t want your main category page to feature the red shirts.  This is because most people will likely land on your main category page and you want to be sure that you have the highest possible opportunity to capture their attention.

As you can see, by immediately breaking down all of your keywords into categories, you will be able to quickly see what the data is trying to tell you.  Knowing the search volume of 10,000 keywords doesn’t necessarily tell you anything.  However, having all of those keywords broken down and sorted by category can tell you have to create your website navigation structure as well as how to create landing pages with maximum appeal.
