It doesn’t matter if this is your first time choosing a web hosting service provider or the hundredth the steps are going to be the same.  Many people already know what their decision calculus will be, the problem arises during the research phase.  It doesn’t matter how great your decision matrix is if you are using poor information to make your final selection.  That means that online research is definitely a skill that you need to have.

Researching potential web hosting service providers online is fairly similar to other products, however there is one big difference.  Hosting companies tend to have more affiliates and resellers promoting their services than anything else.  So what do you need to know before you begin in order to filter out misleading information and gather exactly what you need?

The first thing that most people do is search for reviews.  However, in order to do this effectively, you need to be able identify which reviews are legit and which ones are really just affiliates and resellers pitching their products.  In general, blogs are a terrible resource for this type of information.  There are two reasons fort his.  The first is that a majority of affiliates use blogs to create a “personalized perspective” about their products in order to make sales rather than share real experiences.  The second issue is that forums and other similar resources will often give you a higher percentage of unbiased reviews than blogs.

Now that you understand that, in general, forums and product review sites are likely to be your best potential resources, it is time to understand how they work.  In a normal business, who do think managers and owners hear from the most – people who love their products or hate their products?  For the most part, people who have a bad experience are more likely to share it than those who are satisfied with the product.  This is incredibly important information when it comes to online research.  Almost every hosting company will have more negative reviews than positive reviews.  This isn’t because all hosting providers are poor, rather it is just the nature of the beast.

Additionally, you need to make sure that all of your research is done with your future in mind.  A large number of people will sign up for a hosting service and be forced to switch providers within the first few years.  Sometimes it is simply because their first choice wasn’t a good one, but most of the time it is because they did not research with their future in mind.  It is always a much better idea to research providers that currently over-meet your needs because that will allow you to “grow into them”.  If you don’t want to pay for the extra services up front, then make sure that you target all of your research on hosting providers that will allow you to upgrade your package without actually have to change your DNS settings or move your website.

As you can see, there is a lot to keep in mind when researching web hosting service providers online.  The first thing that you need to understand is that there are a larger number of affiliates, which means more biased reviews, for hosting services than most other products and services sold online.  Second, you need to realize that when using forums, there will almost always be more complaints than compliments, so make sure to keep all of the negative reviews in perspective based on their content rather than their volume.  Finally, always make sure that you are doing all of your research with the future in mind.

When Should You Switch Web Hosting Providers?

When it comes to running an online business, most people will quickly drop services that don’t produce results.  If their SEO company isn’t providing high enough rankings they will find a new company to use.  If their website is poorly designed, they will find someone to redesign it.  If their content creators or social network experts are not meeting expectations they will find someone else.

In spite of that, however, web hosting providers seem to get a pass.  Most people feel that moving their website is a difficult task, which is why they hesitate to change their hosting company, even when they think that a change should be made.  In most cases, the question is no longer is the hosting company meeting expectations, but rather the question is whether or not the hosting company is doing poor enough to justify the change.

When trying to decide if it time to switch hosting providers, there are a number of different variables that you can look at, however there are certain ones that tend to be the most important.  The most important issues all fall under the same general category, which is often referred to as “the basics”.  The basics are the things that almost every hosting provider highlights on their sales page.  This would include things like allowed bandwidth, disk space, uptime, and software compatibility.  If your hosting company is currently failing to meet your requirements in any of these categories then making a switch should be considered a priority.  If your website is down more often than it should be, then you need to make a change.  Most of the top tier hosting providers offer a 99.99% uptime guarantee, which means that your website will be down a maximum of a few minutes per month for maintenance.

If you find that your hosting provider is not compatible with key pieces of software then you should definitely make the change as well.  There is no point in sticking with your current provider if they are preventing you from using tools that will increase your profits.  For example, let’s so that you have a piece of software that will convert 5 additional leads per month and at least one of these leads will convert into a sale.  If you pay a high end programmer to move your entire website, it should still cost less than $100.  This means that economically, paying a professional to move your website to a more compatible hosting service will be a more profitable move in the long run.

If your web hosting provider does meet all of your basic needs, then it is time to look into the extras.  If you are only considering making a switch because of “extras” like unlimited video hosting or a reduced monthly rate then it could be a little harder to decide whether or not to make the switch.  It comes down to a cost-benefit analysis.  If you will save more money in the long run, or increase your level of profits then making the switch should be a no-brainer.  However, if you just want to try out a new piece of software that they are offering or feel like they are just a better choice then the decision could be a little more difficult to make because it becomes more of a judgment call.

In the end, there are two different potential categories to decide whether or not you should switch hosting providers.  The first category is “the basics”.  If your reason for considering a switch falls into the “basics” category then deciding to make the switch should be automatic.  When your hosting provider does not offer you everything that you need to be profitable, then you should definitely move on.  On the other hand, if your reason to switch hosting providers falls in the category of “extras” then making your final decision can be a little more difficult.  It comes down to deciding whether or not it is a good long term decision.  If you aren’t sure, you can always set up a smaller “test” account with the provider that you are considering.
